Agoraphobia Symptoms

Scanning:

Scanning is the constant monitoring of one’s own body for strange or unusual symptoms. Some people with agoraphobia engage in obsessive scanning because they do not trust their bodies and many suffer from hypochondria. As with most people with phobias, people with agoraphobia are prone to catastrophic thinking and can be extremely vulnerable when it comes to taking on new symptoms they hear about, even symptoms of other disorders.

When I had agoraphobia, I was always worried about having some other physical problem or illness. My main fears were that my heart would stop beating or that my lungs would collapse. I spent long hours lying in bed, either feeling my chest to make sure my heart was still beating or blowing air into the palm of my hand to make sure I was still breathing.
