Agoraphobia Research

Benzodiazepines are  a common type of medication prescribed for agoraphobia. They are basically tranquilizers and sleeping pills. You have probably heard of some of the most common types of benzodiazepines which are Ativan, Xanax, and Valium.

When prescribed for agoraphobia, the purpose of benzodiazepines is to relieve anxiety symptoms and/or help induce sleep. Most work within a half hour although some may take up to two hours, depending partly on individual sensitivity you are to medication.

Benzodiazepines mainly reduce anticipatory anxiety. Although they do not inhibit panic attacks directly (like anti-depressants do), they make you less likely to have a panic attack by keeping you in a less anxious state. The main drawbacks with benzodiazepines are that they can be habit-forming and withdrawal from them can cause the same anxiety symptoms they were meant to relieve.
