The Power of Love for Healing Agoraphobia
Excerpt from "How to Help Your Loved One Recover from Agoraphobia" by Karen P. Williams (1993).

"In A Complete Guide to Your Emotions and Your Health, Emrika Padus and the editors of Prevention magazine report that when people feel loved the cells in their body create a healthy biological reaction similar to the effects of good diet and fitness. Love, they believe is a great stress reducer. When sufferers (of agoraphobia) feel love and support from relatives and others, they seem to overcome their ailments better. Unconditional love shown by a spouse is especially helpful.

Dr. Bernard Siegel, author of Love, Medicine, and Miracles, says, "I am convinced that unconditional love is the most powerful known stimulant of the immune system. The truth is, 'love heals'" Dr. Siegel stresses the importance of people completely loving themselves, as well as others. No matter what the disorder, he believes chances of recovery are better when there is self-love along with a strong loving relationship. With these things, you can get through almost anything...

Support people (for people with agoraphobia) must realize how vital their love and affection can be to a sufferer (of agoraphobia). As Andrea, a California woman pointed out, "In the beginning, support people are often our only 'link' to the outside world. Therefore, we must completely rely on the love and affection we receive from this link."
